By blocking enzymes that help us metabolize some drugs, grapefruit juice can increase the amount of the drug in our body. By blocking transporters that help us absorb some drugs, grapefruit juice can decrease the amount of the drug in our body. The severity of the interaction may vary, depending on the person, the drug, and the amount of grapefruit juice consumed. So talk to your health care provider and read the information provided with your prescription or over-the-counter drug to find out:

1. If your specific drug may be affected by grapefruit juice
2. If you can have grapefruit juice, and if so, how much
3. And what other fruits or juices may affect your drug in a similar way.
